Gonzalo Lopez, 46, who had been fleeing since May 12, was killed in a shooting at a residential complex in Jourdanton, Texas, around 10.30pm. Thursday, June 2nd.

Shortly before Lopez’s death, he was identified as the main suspect in the killing of five family members – two adults and three children – in Centerville, about 250 kilometers from the scene of the shooting, authorities said.

Police chased him and Lopez hit a tree after running over pegs. He then got out of the car and started shooting at police, who returned fire and beat him to death, according to Jason Clark, a Texas Department of Justice spokesman.

No police officers were injured in the shooting.

Clark, at a press conference on Thursday night, said Lopez was armed with a firearm and a pistol, believed to have been stolen from the victims’ home.

The victims were not identified Thursday night. They were from Houston, but were spending their weekends at their home in Centerville, reports said.

Lopez has been fleeing detention since he was detained on a busload of prisoners and stabbed the driver before fleeing into the woods in Leon County.

The inmate, who was serving a life sentence for the 2006 murder case, had been transferred to Texas prison headquarters in Huntsville – about 30 miles north of Leon County – for medical attention during the escape, officials said.
