Northern rulers of the All the Progressives Congress said the president, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (seated.), Had denied appointing any candidate for president.
The president reportedly made the remarks during a meeting with North rulers on Monday.
Speaking on behalf of the governors, Simon Lalong of Plateau State, said the President had made it clear that no one was currently in agreement.
This comes in the wake of reports that the Senate President has been announced as a candidate for the APC elections.
“We sat down a few days ago and made a decision and gave advice. While we were on our way to advise the President, part of our conversation was leaked.
“Mr President, being a democrat, insisted that we listen. So, you have given us a chance today. Our meeting today is to confirm where we stand.
“We apologize for the inconvenience caused by the statement (in support of the Southern African Development Community).
“Mr President is pleased with our decision. Mr. The President believes in a democratic system; and that every candidate must appear in a transparent manner.
“What the President has emphasized is that no one is going to be anointed yet, so he directed that the Progressive Governors Forum should meet with the party’s National Working Committee to reach an agreement.”
PUNCH reported that Northern rulers of the All Progressives Congress met with the President at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Monday.
Northern rulers have called on the ruling party to issue its south-facing presidential ticket on Saturday.
They also called for those from the northern region to withdraw from the presidential race.
The message, released after Monday’s meeting, read: “After careful consideration, we wish to express our conviction that after eight years in the office of President Muhammadu Buhari, the APC president in the 2023 elections should be one of our full members from now on. southern countries of Nigeria.
“It is a question of respect for the APC, an obligation not to be affected in any way by the decisions taken by another political party.”
Those in attendance included Abubakar Bagudu of Kebbi, Simon Lalong of Plateau, Abubakar Badaru of Jigawa, Aminu Masari of Katsina, Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa, Bello Matawalle of Zamfara, Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano, Abubakar Bello of Niger, Yahaya Inuwa of Gombe, Babagana. Zulu from Borno, Nasir el-Rufai from Kaduna and AbdulRahman Abdulrazaq from Kwara.
Earlier, the signing of the 2013 All Progressives Congress, Alhaji Buba Galadima, said Buhari had agreed to support former Governor Bola Tinubu of Lagos Province.
He made the claim in an interview published by The PUNCH on Monday.
When Galadima was asked if there was an agreement for Tinubu to replace Buhari, he replied, “It is not a complete agreement, but there was an agreement because Tinubu and one person and the President and everyone else sat down with the information. We found out that they had agreed that if Tinubu was to help Buhari win, he would be Vice-President. When that did not happen, they phoned him and asked for help because of the emergency at the time, which would not allow a Muslim-Muslim ticket.
“They have said that whatever he does, he must invest in ensuring that Buhari becomes President and that if he (Buhari) does anything in his power to help Tinubu become President. It seems they are now back to that understanding. And a promise is a promise whether it is written or not because if you can break it, God knows your heart. And God does not approve of betrayal. If you are committed, whether it is sour or bitter, or sweet, you should swallow it.
“Now, it looks like they want to get back to that Tinubu. That is why Tinubu is bitter and I understand this bitterness, because of the things that happened to him, that I told him years ago. I told her what would happen to her. And everything I predicted in those years is happening now. My prayer for him (Tinubu) is that he come out unharmed and healthy. That’s my biggest prayer.
Asked who was present when Buhari and Tinubu reached the agreement, he said, “I will not tell you but the people involved know. Tinubu came to the meeting with the former governor while Buhari came with the sitting governor. That is why the emperor is so closely associated with Tinubu today and out of fear of God. But I do not want to say the names of both of them, because, Tinubu himself has spoken of this kind of of understanding.
