The Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN) reported on Tuesday that it made N378 million from the sales of tickets at theaters throughout the nation in August.
Ope Ajayi, the national president of CEAN, disclosed this to the public in a conversation with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
He claims that the amount is a 28% increase over the N294 million in ticket revenue achieved in August 2021. As said by Ope Ajayi:
The 37 films shown in August realized over NGN378 million at the box office. 13 Hollywood films accounted for 72.4 percent while 16 Nollywood films made a little over 22 percent
The five highest-grossing movies out of the 37 were listed below, together with their respective earnings by the end of August 2022, starting at number 5 and working our way down.
Are you prepared to discover the top 5? So let’s go!
5. DC League of Super Pets
Krypto, Superman’s dog, assembles a group of superpowered animals when the Justice League is captured by Lex Luthor, including Ace the dog, who gains super strength, PB the pig, who can grow to enormous proportions, Merton the turtle, who gains super speed, and Chip the squirrel, who gains electric prowess.
This animation movie really drove people to the cinema. At the end of August this year, DC League of Super Pets had made N30.9 million from Nigerian cinemas alone.
4. Hey You!
Through an adults-only website, a shy geek meets a sexually assertive woman, but her life is hampered by other men’s obsessive attention.
Cinemas all over the country were particularly fired up by this Nollywood film from Niyi Akinmolayan’s Anthill studios, starring Timini Egbuson and Efe Irele.
The film ranked fourth on the list of the highest-grossing films in August. Hey You! At the end of August this year, has earned N35.9 million alone from Nigerian movie theaters.
Dr. Nate Daniels, who recently got divorced, takes his two teenage kids to a South African game reserve run by Martin Battles, a longtime relative and a wildlife specialist.
However, when a lion, a survivor of vicious poachers, starts hunting them, what starts off as a healing trek quickly turns into a terrifying battle for survival.
The next-highest-grossing movie for August is Idris Elba’s Beast. For the whole month of August, the survival thriller movie successfully drew Nigerians from their homes and into theaters.
Beast has earned N58.8 million from Nigerian cinema alone as of the end of August this year.
Ladybug is an unlucky assassin who’s determined to do his job peacefully after one too many gigs has gone off the rails.
Fate, however, may have other plans as his latest mission puts him on a collision course with lethal adversaries from around the globe — all with connected yet conflicting objectives — on the world’s fastest train.
One of the best films I’ve seen this year and my personal favorite of the five,
Bullet Train didn’t miss a beat, which had people talking and encouraging their friends to watch the movie in a theater.
Bullet Train generated N75.3 million from Nigerian cinema alone by the end of August this year.
1. Thor: Love and Thunder
Thor embarks on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced — a quest for inner peace. However, his retirement gets interrupted by Gorr the God Butcher, a galactic killer who seeks the extinction of the gods.
To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie, Korg and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster, who — to his surprise — inexplicably wields his magical hammer.
Together, they set out on a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance
Not a surprise at all! The blockbuster Marvel film Thor: Love and Thunder has the biggest box office performance in Nigeria in August 2022.
Thor: Love and Thunder had earned N355.5 million from Nigerian theatres alone as of the end of August this year.
(Note: This movie was released in early July, which accounts for the fact that its number is substantially higher than those of the other films, which were released in late July and August.)
