Abeokuta, state of Ogun – Olusegun Obasanjo, a former president, reportedly questioned the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) selection of Atiku Abubakar as their presidential candidate for the 2023 elections, according to a report by PM News.
The decision, in Obasanjo’s opinion, goes against the spirit of the agreement between Nigeria’s North and South and is not politically right, the article claims.
The newspaper reported that Obasanjo spoke on Wednesday, August 17, during Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the APC presidential candidatevisit ,’s to his Hilltop home in Abeokuta.
The newspaper did not provide the identity of its source.
I am very much aware that it’s the turn of the South to produce the next President of Nigeria. I was part of the meeting when the agreement was made between Northern and Southern Leaders”, Obasanjo was quoted to have said.
“I am even surprised PDP gave her ticket to another North candidate.”
In the article, which was also submitted by Sahara Reporters, Obasanjo was also cited as saying: “We will do the right thing when the time comes.
It will be an injustice to the South if the North retains Power after 8 years of control.”
Obasanjo “strongly believes that the 2023 presidency should be zoned to the South, in the interest of equity, justice, and fairness,” according to unnamed sources.
According to the reports, Obasanjo may have chosen to support Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) for president after a northerner emerged as the PDP presidential candidate.
